The Christchurch School of Music Te Kura Puoro turns 70 this year.
Director Celia Stewart talks with RNZ Concert host David Morriss about some of the celebratory events planned, and how the School started up in the first place.
"I always say that if there's one organisation that owes it to the power and determination of one man, it would be the Christchurch School of Music."
"The indomitable Mr Robert Perks, back in 1955, decided that he wanted to provide opportunities in tuition and orchestral music for the young children of Christchurch. And that's how it all began."
The Christchurch School of Music has a weekend of events planned at the end of the month, with a Jubilee Showcase Series of concerts at the Christchurch Town Hall on Sunday 26 July.
