Fiji's prisons chief has pulled out of an official trip to New Zealand after being charged with criminal intimidation.

Sevuloni Naucukidi appeared at the Suva Magistrates Court on Tuesday for allegedly threatening a member of his support staff in July this year.

According to local media reports, the acting commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service was expected to travel to New Zealand as part of a ministerial delegation this week.

While he was granted bail and permitted to travel, he withdrew from the trip "to focus on his duties", the Fiji Sun reported.

He is set to reappear in the Suva Magistrates Court on 17 October.
