10:18 Reality bites - arts and music fellowships on hold
The University of Otago is putting its annual visual arts fellowship ON PAUSE next year, due to budgeting concerns.
The Frances Hodgkins Fellowship has been awarded annually since 1966 and gives a deserving artist a year's salary and a dedicated space in which to hone their craft.
But the university says "volatility in international investment markets" has made providing funds for the fellowship risky. The University's Mozart fellowship for music is also being suspended, with the hopes of bringing them both back in later years.
Some of New Zealand's most famous artists have been recipients - including Grahame Sydney. Famous for his landscape paintings, he explains to Emile why the loss is about more than money.
