Joan Withers, a leading figure in NZ's corporate scene, left school at 16 to become a bank teller, rose through executive ranks and completed an MBA in her mid-30's while working full-time. She's chair of Mighty River Power and is on the board of TVNZ, ANZ and has just won the Shareholders' Association's Beacon Award for her outstanding leadership and work in promoting diversity on boards.
