Police have launched a homicide investigation, after a woman was found dead at a property in the central North Island on Friday.

Emergency services were called to an address in Hinerangi Street, Tūrangi at about 6.30am.

A scene guard was currently stationed at the property.

Police said they were yet to make an arrest relating to the incident, and asked anyone who had information or footage to get in touch.

Taupo Mayor David Trewavas said his heart went out to the people of Turangi and warned them to stay in their homes, if possible.

"I would suggest just to stay inside and have a quiet Friday night, but all the police resources are there," he said. "There's quite a flurry of activity at the police station, so I'm sure they'll be on to this and please just be careful out there."

The council would endeavour to update locals as further details came to hand, Trewavas said.
