Torrential rain flooded roads, brought down slips, and caused sewage flows in Taranaki as the area was pummelled by thunderstorms.

The New Plymouth District Council said contractors were sent to Barrett Road where a slip was reportedly blocking the entire street.

Crews were also assessing slips on Mill, Uruti, and South roads - which were still open.

Manholes also popped and the council was warning of sewage overflows in the stormwater network.

It comes as Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough remain under a state of emergency.

Heavy rain watches are in place for Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula until 11pm tonight, Thursday.

Heavy rain warnings are in place for Bay of Plenty about and west of Opotiki until 2am Friday; Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki until 9am Friday; and Tairawhiti/Gisborne north of Ruatoria until 10am Friday.
