More than 7000 people have reported feeling a magnitude 4.8 earthquake that struck in the centre of the country on Saturday night.

The tremor, classed as moderate, struck at 11.31pm just west of Pelorus Sound in the Marlborough Sounds, at a depth of 51 kilometres.

The 'felt it' reports were made via the government's GeoNet website.

They were clustered across the top of the South Island and up the North Island's west coast to Taranaki.
