A homicide investigation is underway after a man who was found critically injured in Gisborne died.

Police said officers were called to the address on Ormond Rd, between Lytton Rd and Riperata St, in the suburb of Riverdale about 4am on Monday, where the man was found with critical injuries. Police have since confirmed the man has died.

Tairāwhiti Area Commander Inspector Danny Kirk said police rendered first aid to the 36-year-old man and he was transported to Gisborne Hospital where he later died.

"Police have now launched a homicide investigation and are following several lines of inquiry. A person was seen running across Ormond Road and into Riperata Street soon after the incident occurred, and we would like to speak with them," Kirk said.

He acknowledged the death would cause some unease in the community but reassured police are working hard to find the person or people responsible.

Cordons were in place at the property on Monday morning and there would be a visible police presence in the area.

"The investigation team will be in the area carrying out enquiries over the coming days, but we ask anyone with information, or who heard or saw the incident, to please contact us," Kirk said.
