Man found critically injured in Gisborne has been named as Bill Pine Maangi, with police confirming a gun was involved in his death.

The 36-year-old was found by police in a critical condition at an address on Ormond Rd, between Lytton Rd and Riperata St, in the suburb of Riverdale at 4am on Monday.

He was taken to Gisborne Hospital where he later died.

Police said a forensic examination had confirmed a gun was involved in Maangi's death.

Detective Inspector Martin James thanked members of the community who had provided information and urged anyone who hadn't yet reached out to do so.

"We also continue to urge anyone with details of what happened to contact us, anonymously, if need be."

He said police were looking for anyone with dashcam footage from around the Forrester House Ormond Road area between 3am and 4.30am on Monday.

"Mr Maangi didn't deserve to die this way, and I urge those who know what happened to reach out to us."

Maangi's family were receiving support and being updated on the homicide investigation, police said.
