A Fire and Emergency shift manager said that it was still on the scene to monitor smoke coming from the bus' batteries.

Witness Charlton Young said that he saw smoke coming from the roof of the bus for no more than five minutes, but there was no fire.

He said firefighters had brought the extinguishers out, but did not need to use them.

A St John spokesperson told RNZ that one person had sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. It had responded with two ambulances and one rapid response vehicle.

Young said he heard yelling before he saw the bus ram into the station with a loud smash.

"I don't know what they said, but I heard something and then a smash, like a pop almost, and then just glass shatter."

Young said he saw passengers disembark, and none of them appeared to be injuried.

Auckland Transport said it had been working with emergency services to ensure the area was safe.

A spokesperson told RNZ that some bus routes would be detoured until further notice.

Police said enquiries were underway to determine the cause of the crash.
