Police are reportedly preparing to use a series of text messages in the case against NZ Kiwis hooker Brandon Smith in Queensland this week.
In August, Smith was charged with supplying "dangerous drugs, namely cocaine" and divulging inside information for betting purposes.
Australia media reports suggest the case will produce texts between Smith, and the phone of former Sydney Roosters teammate and England international Victor Radley, as they allegedly organise a drug deal during a golf trip to the Sunshine Coast.
Radley allegedly asked for Smith to source a "short eight-ball", which refers to an eighth of an ounce or 3.5 grams.
The alleged drug dealer was arrested in July and Radley's number was found on his phone.
"All good bro you sorted us good man," Radley allegedly texted the dealer. The Roosters second-rower has not been charged or accused of any wrongdoing.
Roosters boss Nick Politis has previously expressed a "zero tolerance" to drug use within his club, but has reportedly held off any action until "all information comes to light".
The Sydney Morning Herald has published the full dialogue from the court evidence brief, including a text conversation between the alleged drug dealers. It includes the following:
Dealer A: Brother, would you drive to Coolum for a B (ball) + 250? It's for the cheese (football emoji) no shot (s**t).
Dealer B: Cheese (football)? Hahaha I'm booked in haircut at 1, I can after if needed?
Dealer A: Sweet. 900 for 2. Would ya do that after the cut? They are NRL players, bro you'll know I'm (sic) as soon as you see him.
Smith, whose nickname is 'Cheese', began the 2025 NRL season with Sydney Roosters, but was released early from his contract to join South Sydney Rabbitohs in May.
Ironically, he was allowed to play their regular season finale against his old club, with the Roosters needing victory to clinch their playoff spot.
Smith has played 13 tests for New Zealand and three made three appearances for Māori All-Stars.
