Australian captain Mitchell Marsh struck 85 in Australia's run chase at Bay Oval against the Black Caps, with the inning proving to be a match-winning one. The Australians cruised to victory with six wickets in hand in the second innings, chasing down the target of 185.

Earlier, Tim Robinson and Daryl Mitchell had salvaged a shocking start for the Black Caps, which saw them lose three wickets in the first two overs. Robinson scored an unbeaten 106 off 66 balls, putting on a 92-run partnership with Mitchell and guiding the Black Caps to what should have been a competitive total.

However, none of the Black Caps' pace attack could make any headway into the Australian top order, with Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes and Kyle Jamison all going for over 10 runs per over. Marsh's classy knock ended when he was caught by Robinson off the bowling of Henry in the 15th over, but by then the damage was well and truly done.

The two teams meet again at the same venue on Friday evening.
