The White Ferns have been beaten by Australia by 89 runs in their opening World Cup game in Indore.

After winning the toss Ash Gardner scored a century as Australia were bowled out for 326 in their last over.

Pace bowlers Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu took three wickets each.

In reply New Zealand lost both openers Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer for ducks.

However captain Sophie Devine hit her ninth ODI century to give New Zealand some hope.

Devine's 111 came off 112 balls and included three sixes and 12 fours.

However the rest of the New Zealand lineup was unable to give her much support as New Zealand was dismissed in the 44th over for 237.

The White Ferns next game is against South Africa next Monday.

"It's bittersweet to be fair," when Devine was asked about her innings.

"I'd throw it all away to make sure we won."

However Devine said she was happy with how her team performed.

"Just happy with the fight this team showed, a couple of years ago we would have thrown the towel in pretty early.

"But it's a hard one, you wanna be on the winning team, so hard to digest at the moment.

"We probably missed line and length a bit on a flat surface. I just think the way players are able to adapt and play their role is what is making this team at the moment."

Devine said she likes what the wickets are showing for this tournament.

"It's probably about who can hold their nerve for longer. Great cricket wicket, quick outfield, small boundary. Whether you're setting or chasing you'll always be in the game."
