Southland and Clutha remain under states of local emergency, after extreme winds on Thursday toppled trees and powerlines.
Kaikōura is also still in a state of emergency, with fears earlier fires north of the township could flare up again.
Many communities are isolated, without access to power, water, and telecommunications.
Some lower North Island households are also without power.
Overnight, workers have been trying to get a generator running at Clutha's Ōwaka water treatment plant.
Back-up generators are being brought to Southland from Christchurch to help get cell phone towers back online.
