The Situation
A weakening front moves northeast over the country today, followed by a ridge of high pressure. The ridge begins to move northeast during Wednesday as a northwest flow develops across the lower South Island.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland and Auckland
Partly cloudy with isolated showers, clearing by tomorrow afternoon.
Waikato to Taranaki, also Bay of Plenty and the central high country
Partly cloudy with isolated showers, clearing this evening. Fine tomorrow.
Gisborne to Wairarapa, also Whanganui to Wellington, Nelson and Marlborough.
Mostly fine, but isolated showers this afternoon and evening. Becoming cloudy from Whanganui to Kapiti tomorrow afternoon.
Buller and Grey
Showers, some heavy with squally thunderstorms, clearing this evening. Isolated showers returning tomorrow morning.
Westland and Fiordland
Fine today. Isolated showers developing tomorrow morning, turning to rain in Fiordland at night.
Canterbury, Otago and Southland
Showers about Otago and Southland extending north this morning, clearing Otago this afternoon and elsewhere tonight. Mainly fine tomorrow.
Chatham Islands
A few showers, turning to rain with possible thunderstorms tonight, easing tomorrow morning, clearing afternoon.

Thursday
North Island: Scattered showers in the west. Mainly fine elsewhere with isolated afternoon showers inland. South Island: Rain in the west, with heavy falls. Periods of rain in the south. Mainly fine elsewhere with increasing cloud.
Friday
North Island: Scattered showers in the west, turning to rain from Whanganui to Kapiti later. Fine in the east. South Island: Rain in the west, with heavy falls. Periods of rain in the south, spreading elsewhere later.
Saturday
North Island: Rain in the south, spreading everywhere early, easing to a few showers late. South Island: Rain in the west, with heavy falls, clearing. Showers in the south with snow lowering to 400 metres for a time. Periods of rain elsewhere, clearing.
And at the Chathams
A few showers, clearing Thursday morning and becoming fine in the evening. Rain with heavy falls on Saturday. Southwesterlies turning northwest Thursday morning, becoming strong on Friday then changing southwest on Saturday.
