Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday
The Situation
A strong and moist northeast flow precedes a front as it moves east across New Zealand today and early tomorrow, followed by showery westerlies. Another front moves north across the South Island later tomorrow.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
A front brings heavy rain and northerly gales to many areas.
Northland to Taranaki, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo
Rain, with heavy falls, easing from the west tonight and early tomorrow then showers, some heavy and possibly thundery in the west.
Gisborne to Wairarapa
Scattered rain, heavy about northern Gisborne, clearing tomorrow morning then fine.
Whanganui to Wellington, including Taihape
Occasional rain today. Showers tomorrow, mainly north of Wellington, with possible thunderstorms about Kapiti.
Marlborough and Nelson
Rain today with heavy falls. Fine spells and the odd shower tomorrow.
Buller to Fiordland
Periods of rain or showers, possibly heavy and thundery, clearing from the south tomorrow.
Canterbury, Otago and Southland
Often cloudy. Isolated showers becoming more widespread tomorrow, some heavy and possibly thundery.
Chatham Islands
Cloudy periods. Heavy rain late tomorrow, and northerlies rising to gale.

Thursday
North Island: Occasional rain or showers in the south and east. Scattered showers elsewhere, becoming confined to Northland later. South Island: Fine or becoming fine in the west. Showers elsewhere, turning to rain for a time in Canterbury.
Friday
North Island: Showers in the east and south. Mainly fine elsewhere, with showers in the north clearing. South Island: Scattered showers in the east. Mostly fine elsewhere, with showers clearing in the south.
Saturday
North Island: Showers in the east and south easing. Fine elsewhere. South Island: Generally fine, but a few showers in the south and a possible shower about Canterbury.
And at the Chathams
Periods of rain with heavy falls possible, easing to showers on Friday. Gale northerlies easing early Thursday then strong southerlies developing, rising to gale for a time on Friday.
