A UK rail staffer has been labelled a hero for his efforts trying to stop an attacker during a mass stabbing on a London-bound train.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening (UK time) and shocked Britain. Eleven people were injured.

Two people were originally suspected of the attack, however only one of them is now being treated as a suspect, CNN reported.

He is a 32-year-old British national.

In a statement, British Transport Police said five people injured in the attack have been discharged from hospital while one remains in a "life-threatening" condition.

That person has been identified as a staff member of the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) who police say tried to stop the attacker.

"Detectives have reviewed the CCTV from the train and it is clear his actions were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many people's lives."

Andrew Johnson has been named as the driver of the LNER service at the centre of the UK train stabbing attack on 1 November 2025 and is being applauded for his actions.

The train driver, identified as Andrew Johnson, is also being praised for his actions during the attack.

According to BBC, Nigel Roebuck, of a train drivers' union, said he did everything he was trained to do at the "right time and in the right way".

Roebuck told the BBC: "He brought the train into a station where passengers could disembark safely and where police, fire and rescue, and ambulance crew could get on to the train and attend to the victims and, we believe, catch the culprit."

"He showed real courage, real dedication, and real determination in the most difficult of circumstances.

"Our thoughts tonight are with his colleague who is still in intensive care," Roebuck said of the staffer police hailed a hero.

In a statement, Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy said the investigation into the attack is moving "at pace" and police are confident the one person in custody acted alone.

"As would be expected, specialist detectives are looking into the background of the suspect we have in custody and the events that led up to the attack.

"This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families - especially the brave member of rail staff whose family are being supported by specialist officers.

"Having viewed the CCTV from the train, the actions of the member of rail staff were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people's lives."

As reported by CNN, police are working to find a motive for the attack but had previously said it was not believed to be a terror attack.
