Rain has blocked the Black Caps' shot at redemption against Australia following Wednesay night's defeat.

The second T20 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui was initially delayed by the downpours, before being called off entirely.

The weather cleared enough to start a nine-overs-a-side contest after delays of more than two hours, but another heavy shower just 13 balls into the contest saw those hopes dashed.

The washout means Australia keeps the Chappell/Hadlee Trophy, but the Black Caps have a chance at squaring the series when the two sides meet again for the third match on Saturday night.

In Wednesday's series opener, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh struck 85 in Australia's run chase, with the inning proving to be a match-winner.

The Australians cruised to victory with six wickets in hand, chasing down the target of 185.
